University of Sydney advances to Uecomm MetroWave

One of Australia's leading universities, the University of Sydney, has chosen Uecomm's MetroWave service to provide its students and academic team with the technology services they demand.  Uecomm's MetroWave service, a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) solution capable of simultaneously sending a range of protocols at a very high speeds over a single optical fibre pair.

The university has an international reputation for its outstanding teaching and as a centre of research excellence. It was therefore critical to ensure its technology service kept up with the demand from students and academics as well as meeting day-to-day business needs.

"Uecomm's fibre-based services have accommodated the university's business requirements for several years, including providing the high-speed bandwidth for data, voice and Internet.  There was a requirement to augment the data capacity and speed between our Sydney and Cumberland campuses due to a substantial increase in the university's daily bandwidth usage," said Ed Binney, University of Sydney, Chief Information Officer.

Addressing the need to transmit large quantities of information between campuses across metropolitan Sydney, the move to Uecomm MetroWave gives both sites access to two gigabit per second Ethernet and Fibre Channel data capacity, and the capability to upgrade services to more than ten gigabits per second when required.

"The university needed a reliable, very high-speed link in order to implement our new enrolment application - and we needed it within 20 days. To our delight Uecomm was able to deliver the service even though over a kilometre of fibre construction was required," explained Mr Binney. "I was very impressed with Uecomm's commitment to work above and beyond their normal processes to achieve the University of Sydney's requirements."

"The project implementation was achieved due to exceptional teamwork between the university, Uecomm, and Uecomm's suppliers," said Brendan Park, Uecomm Product and Marketing Manager. "Uecomm worked with our network and equipment supplier teams, NDC and Nortel, to provide the university with a fully managed service between the campuses across metropolitan Sydney."

Uecomm's approach to MetroWave is flexible and customised.  Each MetroWave service is tailored to the environment of individual customers to ensure that the service always meets their requirements.

MetroWave is a point-to-point managed WDM service that is delivered on Uecomm's secure and reliable optical fibre infrastructure. The service offers low latency and the ability to customise solutions. Typical applications for this service range from VoIP and videoconferencing to storage area networking, server and mainframe mirroring.

"MetroWave is ideally suited to business continuity and disaster back up. It provides the significant bandwidth required to enable synchronous data replication to remote sites, minimising data loss in the event of a fail-over," continued Mr Park.
"With the right IT and carrier infrastructure in place, any business can have the infrastructure flexibility, as well as the peace of mind the University of Sydney will now experience," concluded Mr Park.
