New commercial high speed optical fibre internet launched in Australia

An innovative commercial shared high speed optical fibre intranet was launched in Queensland today at the Eight Miles Plains Technology Park in Brisbane by Queensland Deputy Premier, Mr Jim Elder.

This high bandwidth intranet will enable high volume and high speed exchange of information in real time between all companies occupying the 42 buildings in the Park.

It was installed and commissioned by Uecomm, under a State Government contract, in conjunction with Shortech, the Park's data services manager. Uecomm is one of Australia's major owner-operators of optical fibre communications networks, with optical fibre networks in urban and suburban Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.

Uecomm Managing Director, Mr Keith Ondarchie, said that the network would , in time, be connected to Uecomm's fibre optic networks in the Pacific Innovation Corridor between Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

"At this stage, we have built a community network infrastructure," said Mr Ondarchie. "It enables businesses in the Park to communicate with one another at all times and to work more smartly together. Current capabilities include videoconferencing and a host of other advanced communications functions between buildings, including remote printing and inventory control.

"Further down the track, the network may be connected to our optical fibre network in the Pacific Innovation Corridor. This will open the door to real time communications with businesses in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast and in cities around Australia. "

Mr Ondarchie said the intranet network was a flagship for Uecomm and the Queensland government.

"This high bandwidth low cost network can handle high volume, high speed information and is extremely reliable.

"Best of all, it gives all businesses situated in the Park the opportunity to develop new and truly innovative services for the global market.

"With this new technology, this Smart Park in the Smart State is truly a model for the new Millennium."
