Uecomm chosen by Lucent to help build One.Tel Mobile Network
Uecomm Pty Ltd, formerly United Energy Telecommunications, announced it has entered into agreements to help Lucent Technologies build and manage One.Tel's 1800 GSM mobile network.
The agreements are worth approximately $18 million over the initial5-year terms. The network will utilise over 300 kilometres of UeComm's fibre optic network in Melbourne, Brisbane and the GoldCoast. In keeping with the spirit of co-operation that Lucent and UeComm have formed, Lucent will gain selected access to Uecomm's parent company's (United Energy Limited) electricity zone sub-stations in the south east suburbs of Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula for tele-housing purposes.
One.Tel, will "soft Launch" its GSM mobile communications network inthe South Eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Brisbane and the Gold Coast in the first quarter of 2000 based on Uecomm's Ultra High Transmission Network. Uecomm's fibre network has a higher reliability than radiowave technology and also allows for easy expansion in the future.One.Tel has selected Lucent Technologies to complete the national GSM1800 mobile network. The roll out of a national GSM 1800 Phase 2+network is the next stage in preparation for the evolutionary movetowards 3G mobile technologies.
"Deals such as these with Lucent is what continues to drive the growth of the Uecomm network", said Keith Ondarchie, Uecomm Managing Director. "It also allows us the opportunity to provide even more companies with innovative and cost effective communications solutions", Mr Ondarchie added.
Uecomm has significant metropolitan area networks in Melbourne,Sydney and Brisbane. Its rapidly expanding fibre optic network is due to the growing demand for bandwidth, fuelled by the growth of the Internet, voice, data and video applications. Aside from other carriers, Uecomm's major customers include government, banking, health care and the education sectors to name a few.
