Uecomm today announced that the fibre based services underpinning the Western Australian IVEC was now operational. The announcement was made at the launch of the Interactive Virtual Environment Consortium (IVEC) in Perth on Friday 10th May 2002.
IVEC connects some of the leading educational and research institutions in Western Australia, namely the University of Western Australia, Curtin University, CSIRO and TAFE campuses. IVEC provides support to projects in the field of process modelling, interactive multimedia, film, minerals and energy.
John Morrissey, Infrastructure Project Manager of the CSIRO Centre for Networking Technologies for the Information Economy (CENTIE) commented, "This is a quantum leap in network useability. It allows users to do new things. Things that can't be done any other way. The fibre network allows us to experiment on anything, anywhere. We can connect multiple equipment vendors, and try things in the 'real world'."
Uecomm's Products and Marketing Director, Brendan Park, commented "The Network went live this week and is successfully carrying user traffic. This fibre solution provides virtually unlimited bandwidth and flexibility. It can support the most advanced applications. Uecomm has over 1,900 kilometres of optical fibre in the metropolitan and CBD areas of Australia's major cities. This puts us in a great position to provide fibre infrastructure to the research community in Perth. Uecomm is proud to be associated with this cutting edge program."
